Standard Bank was a bank founded in the Cape Province of South Africa in 1862 by John Paterson.[1] After establishing a number of branches, Standard became a leading bank in financing the development of the Kimberley diamond fields from 1867. Standard then expanded its network to Johannesburg when gold was discovered there in 1885. Half of the output from the world's second largest goldfield was sent through Standard Bank to London. Standard then expanded throughout Africa, but it was not until 1883 that the bank officially adopted the name Standard Bank of South Africa. In 1962, the bank changed its name to Standard Bank Ltd., and its South African business was spun off into a separate company, Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd.
